The increasing convergence of the digital and physical worlds has driven the development and integration of Operational Technology (OT) and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) across various industries, including manufacturing, energy, transportation, and healthcare.

The rise of Industrial Internet-of-Things (IIOT) devices and evolving cyber threats from traditional IT systems to OT environments pose significant risks, potentially leading to severe physical and operational consequences. [Please kindly refer to the “Principles of Operational Technology (OT) Cybersecurity” published on 1 October 2024 by Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) for more information.]

Given the rapid growth and evolving complexity of these technologies, it is crucial to assess the knowledge, understanding, and interest of engineers working in relevant fields. This survey aims to gather insights into their familiarity with OT and CPS, their current involvement in related projects, and their perspectives on the challenges, opportunities, and skills required to effectively work with these technologies.

This survey will provide valuable feedback to IES to guide both the development of targeted educational or accreditation programs and the future direction of OT and CPS development, ensuring that our engineers are equipped with the tools and knowledge necessary to thrive in an increasingly connected, automated world.
